Our programs are built to encourage students to think about their future.
As a part of that future, we want to help students plan for college and
the workforce, by choosing the classes and internships that will help
them achieve their goals.
The
programs on this page are just a sampling of the work we do to broaden
the opportunities for our future leaders and educators.

Educator Internships
Internships aren't just for students anymore. Teachers,
too, can benefit from a summer job. Educator internship programs give
teachers a first-hand view of the kinds of jobs their students may find
themselves in. Not only does it give them valuable outside-the-classroom
experience, but often teachers are able to integrate what they learn into
their teaching curriculum.

Shaping the Future
"It's never too early to start thinking about the future."
That's the philosophy behind the Shaping the Future Conference put on
by a public-private partnership of the National Science Foundation. The
conference brings together players from undergraduate education in science,
math, engineering and technology to talk about the issues facing educators
in the future.
"Come
help us build the 21st Century Science and Technology Workforce." says
Dr. Neal Smatresk, Dean of Science at The University of Texas at Arlington.
He invites all who are interested in science education reform and the
development of a well-prepared workforce to join him for "Shape II," an
in-depth look at state and national science standards and their linkages
to curriculum reform and workforce development. The conference brings
together key stakeholders from government, industry, K-12 and higher education,
and workforce development to take part in reviewing and critiquing the
national and state science standards and how these translate into a well-prepared
science and technology workforce.
Shaping the Future II will take place on October 18th and 19th 2001 at The University of Texas at Arlington's Campus. For registration and more information, visit www.uta.edu/cos/thefuture2/index.html

If I Had a Hammer
If I Had A Hammer is one of the most innovative educational programs in
the country. The program puts the entire construction of a house -- from
working with a budget to putting the roof on -- in students' hands. Through
the process, which includes a classroom curriculum, 4th-6th grade students
learn the real life application of subjects they've studied for years
in school: math, science, social studies and language arts.
